When hosting a storage device, it also provides network storage performance equal to that of many high-end dedicated NAS servers.</div>

Retro design, powerful hardware</h3>

The new WRT1900AC arrives with a completely new design compared with routers released by Linksys over the last few years. Indeed, this model harkens back to the "classic" decade-old, blue-and-black Linksys design. It's reminiscent of the earlier WRT series (such as the <a data-s-object-id="mncol;rvwBody" href="http://www.cnet.com/products/linksys-wrt54gs-wireless-g-broadband-router/" style="color: #b80000; cursor: pointer; font-weight: 600; text-decoration: none; transition-duration: 0.2s; transition-property: all; transition-timing-function: ease;">WRT54Gs</a>), albeit much larger than those models. It's wall-mountable, but it retains the stackable design of previous Linksys gear (the company will soon release a switch that will be able to sit on top).</div>

Of course, the new WRT router now comes with much more powerful components than its ancient predecessors. In fact, it's the most powerful home router on the market to date, running a 1.2Ghz ARM-based dual-core processor, and containing 128MB of flash storage as well as 256MB of DDR3 RAM. This powerful hardware is even more significant considering that Linksys says the router will also support third-party firmware. OpenWRT is pledging to release compatible firmware sometime this month, and DD-WRT and Tomato might have theirs by June.</div>

On its back, the router has four gigabit LAN ports and one gigabit WAN (Internet) port. It also comes with one USB 3.0 port and another port that can work as either a USB 2.0 or an eSATA connection. This is the first router I've seen that supports eSATA. You can use these ports to host up to two external storage devices at a time.</div>

We don’t know how Windows 10 Mobile will perform in-market, but we do know that Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 / 8.1 generally failed to move the bar on market share. Microsoft’s commitment to flagship devices and its ability to win Windows Phone designs from companies not named “Nokia” have both been poor. Even so, hardware hasn’t generally been the issue — there have been good high-end Windows Phone devices and the OS has won accolades for performing well on low-end equipment compared to either Android or iOS.</div>

One of the key problems for Windows Phone has been the lack of software. Apps that customers tend to expect by default have often been missing or delayed. In theory, Windows 10 will simplify the entire App Store concept <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/computing/202167-microsoft-cant-make-up-its-mind-rebrands-universal-applications-as-windows-apps" style="color: #b1700a; text-decoration: none;">by offering “Universal” apps</a> that can move seamlessly between phones and laptops or desktops, but Microsoft’s curation and Windows Store design have been terrible to-date. While the situation has slowly improved since Windows 8 launched, every time we’ve revisited the state of the Windows Store we’ve been buried in a sea of unofficial “apps” for common services and extremely poor quality software.</div>

If Microsoft wants to win customers to Windows 10, it needs to confront the reasons why existing individuals don’t pay any attention to current handsets. The only way to likely do that is with a combined approach that targets both software availability and through handset discounts that put iPhone 6 or Galaxy S6-equivalent hardware into people’s hands for dramatically less money. Alternatively, the company could continue offering extremely competitive midrange handsets — give people best-in-class hardware for $200 off-contract phones and you’ll pull in some attention, no matter what. Frankly, if Microsoft is serious about winning friends and influencing buyers, it could do far worse than simply paying developers to bring applications over to the Windows ecosystem.</div>

At the same time, however, it makes sense for Microsoft to be evaluating just how much good money it wants to throw after bad in the mobile world. The concept of Windows on a tablet isn’t going to go away, thanks to 2-in-1 laptops and detachable devices. Developing the Universal application ecosystem will still pay dividends for Xbox One cross-development. There’s also the idea of emulation at the OS level or of running some Android code natively from within device wrappers (we discussed both of these options earlier this year).</div>

Simply launching Windows 10 Mobile isn’t going to be enough to fix Microsoft’s mobile OS problems because the problem hasn’t <em>been</em> the OS to start with. And Microsoft has to look at the costs of fixing that problem, against the costs of simply licensing Android and providing its own custom software suite (backed up by some elements of the Google Play services). If Microsoft isn’t willing to take the steps required to fix its software ecosystems, simply offering an application suite and potentially a software “skin” might be the better option.</div>

The SSD in question is based on Jmicron’s Heracles controller, but it’s not clear which iteration of the Jmicron hardware is used here. The controller is officially branded as a Jmicron Heracles, but it’s not clear if this refers to the JMF811 custom controller that Galax showed at the beginning of the year, or if it’s a rebranded Jmicron JMF667H. The photo below identifies the chip as a custom GXH1001, but that part number doesn’t shed much light on the architecture’s origins.</div>

One feature of the drive that Galax is calling out is its support for what it called SLC Cache Auto Release. According to the company, SLC Cache Autorelease “streamlines the data pipeline and prevents cache bottlenecks. This effectively eliminates the performance drops prevalent in competing drives and lets the GALAX Gamer maintain maximum speed indefinitely.” Galax wasn’t able to provide further details on how the technology works, but it sounds similar to the Dynamic Write Caching that Micron deploys on its drives. To put it simply: Many manufacturers use a pool of SLC memory to ensure higher performance. Dynamically allocating that pool, rather than statically sizing it for a certain amount of NAND in particular locations, allows for better overall flexibility and helps keep a drive running quickly.</div>

According to Galax, the Gamer SSD family can maintain higher transfer rates even when the drive is nearly completely full as compared to other drives, which see more dramatic performance fall-offs in this state.</div>

We can’t confirm the 840 EVO’s performance — we don’t have a 120GB 840 EVO drive to test against — but can confirm that the Galax 120GB’s performance remains fairly consistent, even when the drive is nearly full.</div>

We benchmarked the Galax 120GB SSD on our Core i7-4790K testbed using an Asus Z97-Deluxe motherboard and 8GB of DDR3-2133. While that’s a bit overkill for a modest SSD, it let us keep continuity with drives we’d tested in the past. Unfortunately, since it <em>has</em> been awhile since we did SSD testing, and 120GB models aren’t the kind of hardware most companies are sampling these days, it’s a bit hard to come up with comparison models. We’ve had to settle for blowing the dust off a few larger drives from 2013 and 2014.</div>

In theory, this could have left the Galax drive at a disadvantage, since smaller drives sometimes have fewer memory channels and lower overall performance. In practice, it turned out not to matter much, and while time prevented us from doing more than touching on the drive’s overall performance, detailed synthetic results are available . We elected to test the drive in both PCMark 7 and PCMark 8. Both of these applications contain real-world storage traces that were designed to replicate performance in a variety of real-world tasks and scenarios.</div>
